Les prépositions sont suivies d'un nom ou d'un groupe nominal : 
'He was kept in after school due to/owing to his bad behaviour.'
= He was kept in after school on account of/because of/for his bad behaviour.
= He was kept in for behaving badly.(for+VING)
'Due to/owing to a broken leg, he had to stay home.
= 'He had to stay home because of/on account of a broken leg.'

Les conjonctions sont suivies d'un sujet et d'un verbe. 
'He was kept in after school because/as/since/for he had skipped a lesson.'
